Since 1952, thousands of youth have learned to play tennis in ICT’s Summer Parks program. We are proud to create 50 jobs each summer for youth, many of whom grew up learning tennis in this very program. We hope you can join us at a park this summer!

Program Information

Kids build teamwork, confidence, and hand-eye coordination skills, learn healthy nutrition habits and develop a life-long love of physical fitness. Group drills and games teach kids the volley, groundstroke, overhead, and serve. Rackets are provided for youth to use during practice.

• When: June 15 – July 31, 2026 (No classes week of July 4)

AGES & LOCATIONS (view map for detailed age breakdown at each park)
Groups are split up by age at each park. At most locations, younger kids play during the first hours, and older kids play later. Some parks have two 1-hour programs, and some have four 1-hour programs. Classes run between 8:00 am – 1:00 pm.   • How do I register?
    You can register online February 9!
  • Does my child need a racket?
    Rackets are available as needed for all participants, free of charge.
  • How do I get a scholarship?
    To apply for a scholarship for the program, follow these steps:1. Complete the online application form for the scholarship.
    2. Wait for approval of your scholarship application before registering for the program.
    3. Once your scholarship is approved, your child will be enrolled in the program.
    4. You will receive a confirmation email with details about the program location and schedule.
    Remember:
    – Do not register for the program before your scholarship application is approved.
    – Registering for a session before your scholarship request is processed will make you ineligible for a scholarship.

  • Can my kids join after start date?
    – Yes, kids can join the program at any time.
    – Weekly online registration will be open until the Friday before the starting date.
  • What if my child can only come three days / week?
    – Kids can attend whenever they are available, there is no minimum day commitment.
  • When is our payment due by?
    – Payment is required before or during the first week of class.
  • What is your cancellation policy?
    – All cancellation or change requests must be made by emailing parks@innercitytennis.org
    – Program cancellations will be provided with an account credit
    – Refund* requests will be evaluated on a case by case basis
  • What if we want to change what week the player is attending?
    – Please email us at parks@innercitytennis.org if you’d like to update your registration
    – Only updates requested at least one week in advance will be considered
    – Players will be moved to requested class if there are spots available
    – No changes may be made to your registration within one week of the class starting
  • Do you allow make up classes if my child needs to miss a day?
    – Make-up classes will not be available for this program
  • How do kids become coaches in the program?

SUMMER TENNIS IN THE PARK PROGRAM OVERVIEW

InnerCity Tennis (ICT) has partnered with the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Department (MPRB) since the 1970s to provide summer tennis instruction to the youth of Minneapolis. ICT and the MPRB are looking for qualified and enthusiastic individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives to teach tennis and be positive role models for youngsters and teens.

JOB OVERVIEW / GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • All applicants must pass a background check and complete an interview, as well as attend a mandatory orientation and training. All Head and Assistant Instructors must have reliable transportation to bring equipment to the park daily.
  • Teach tennis fundamentals to groups of children and youth ages 6-17 with a fun, positive, outgoing attitude
  • Teach ICT’s seven character values
  • Follow and execute tennis drills & activities according to pre-designed lesson plans
  • Continually keep kids active and engaged in fun and challenging activities while maintaining a safe environment
  • Act as a role model to all children participating
  • Interact with children, parents/guardians and co-workers in a professional manner at all times
  • Work Days & Hours*: 10 – 22.5 hours/week, Monday – Friday (7:30 am – 1:00 pm time frame)

AVAILABLE POSITIONS

HEAD INSTRUCTOR (starting at $17+/hour)
Head Instructors will deliver and lead tennis programs on site. They will oversee daily activities, and supervise Assistant and Apprentice Instructors at their park. They will handle all parent/child concerns.

  • Must be 17+ years old
  • Minimum of 2+ years of experience teaching tennis or coaching children preferred
  • Prior supervisory experience
  • College tennis playing experience preferred

ASSISTANT INSTRUCTOR (starting at $16.57/hour)
Assistant Instructors will assist in the delivery of program lessons and management of equipment. They will help with various tasks such as warm up activities, taking attendance, etc.

  • Must be 15+ years old
  • Junior Varsity, High School or College athletic experience preferred
  • Prior experience teaching or working with children

APPRENTICE INSTRUCTOR (starting at $15.97/hour)
Assist the Head and Assistant Instructors with daily lessons and activities. They will help with managing participants.

  • Must be 14+ years old
  • Previous athletic experience preferred
  • Prior experience working with children
